A Collaboration with Adam Transue of Studio Transue, The Netherlands.

Concrete, Cypress

A memorial bench for Adam's Big Brother . . .

The Cypress is milled to order and so needs to dry for about 90 days.  So this had to be bought first and "sticker stacked" to dry prior to getting started with the concrete bases & with enough time for it to dry enough.

Far Right photo shows the 4x4's "sticker stacked" with dry 1x2's between each layer and a little space between each board, and in front of an exhaust fan for the studio so iut was dry by the time we needed it to be.

Jamie super enjoyed his Harley & his Cadillac . . .

The recess for the candle in the back is made with styrofoam CNC carved, stacked & smoothed embeded in the forms.

The forms are lined with 0.010" aluminum sheet to produce a smooth finish.

The rebar is epoxy coated and a CNC carved block of foam is inserted inside to reduce the weight without compromising the structure.

Cabinet grade plywood is kerf cut to produce the curves, the screwed together.

The surface is touched up while the concrete mix is still green the day the forms are stripped.  The custom mix utilizes polyethylene fibers and a superplasticizer that increases high early strength, allows forms to be stripped within 16 hours, and increases strength by about 30%.

The touch up is done with a portland/water mixture with very little water and polished into the surface with a steel trowel to produce a uniform slick finish.

The base to the right I decided was actually a little too pitted to get the finish good enough, so an another base was made that with a much better finish.  This one became a permanent fixture at the studio entry courtyard.
