Rock Holder Coral - a map of life Embedded fossilized elements. Again embedded in Lacewood which itself has a soft grain which is embedded in a harder grain - appearing as floating, lacey elements in a darker field. The use of this composition as a coaster derives from the porous quality of the coral stone. This will absorb water "sweated" off by cold drinks and be contained by the bed of clear epoxy that serves to embed the stone in the lacewood. The stone is pressed into the uncured epoxy and it is allowed to set. Then the entire composition is ground, sanded, polished, and finished with a clear acrylic. The stone face is masked so that the acrylic does not fill the pores of the stone. By this process, the wood and the epoxy are polished and waxed to seal them from moisture entry while the stone maintains its rough quality and is allowed to absorb and evaporate water.
