Intense Band Fitness's    |    Smart Belz

Adjustable band barbell

In Collaboration with Rodney Alford of Intense Band Fitness

Rodney's patented idea was make a barbell-like setup that would use elastic bands

Far right, the bench bar inserts allow a bar to be inserted into a workout bench to hook and anchor the bands.

The SmartBellz can be used as a barbell or a dumbell for a complete workout.

This presentation is a summary in reverse chronological order of the design, development, prototype fabrication of the project.

The clamps are modeled after the lion's head logo and have a tab that fits into the Smartbell head and locks it to the bar to prevent it from spinning on the bar and from sliding.

Above:  the texture on the bar is engraved with the 4th axis rotary cnc router and is the same pattern as is on the grips which is derived from the Lion's mane of the  logo.

Right:  the extra long bands (120") are marked with a red warning line to indicate the max extension.  Also the SmartBell head is designed to facilitate relatively easy swap of the band so the user can install different width (and therefore strength) bands for different people or preferences, or in the case that the band ages and needs replaced.

The project is developed in Rhino3d and hand sketches combined with cnc file generation using grasshopper3d, and various other CAM programs.
